Learn to Play Hockey is the perfect starting point for any child interested in playing hockey, even if they've never been on the ice before. Learn to Play Hockey teaches the fundamentals of both ice skating and hockey, getting kids comfortable moving about the ice in full hockey gear.

Additional Info:

Practice Format:

The practice will start with ~8 minutes of free play time where the kids will be supervised but they get a chance to skate and free play. *First practices will include an off-ice introduction for kids who have never skated before on how to get up when you’ve fallen on the ice.

After free play, a lead coach will clap their stick on the ice and everyone will come in and meet as a group to go over the word of the day.  Coaches will break kids into groups based on age and skill ability.

Groups will play games based on their levels with the goal of progressing their skills.

Each player needs a USA Hockey number in order to be on the ice.

BEFORE you register, please go to USAhockeyregistration.com and register through them. The confirmation number that you receive in the response email (9 digits followed by the first 4 letters of your child's last name) is the number you will need before registering for a program.

Equipment Info:

A full set of hockey gear is required for kids to play on the ice. MRC offers full sets of gear for kids to borrow for the season at no extra cost, as long as it is returned at the end of the season in March. Parents will be required to fill out an Equipment Rental form for any gear borrowed.

Any child borrowing gear will need to be fitted for it. Emails will be sent out a couple of week before the season begins with a link where you can sign up for a gear fitting time. If you register within a week of the program beginning, please plan to arrive no later than 1 hour prior to the program ice time to be fitted for gear.

For new hockey parents, below is a link to a website with great parental resources, including hot to get dressed!
